How Dependent Personality Disorder Evolves

Diagnosing dependent personality disorder requires understanding its development. Certain cultural practices or developmental stages, such as children’s reliance on parents, are not the disorder. Dependent personality disorder often manifests when individuals should transition from adolescence to adulthood but do not.

Symptoms of Dependent Personality Disorder

The disorder embeds two core beliefs: they cannot meet their own needs, and others must meet their needs. These beliefs lead to dependent relationships, characterized by clinginess, anxiety, and excessive compliance.

Dependent personality disorder (301.6[F70.7]) has three core symptoms:

  • Anxiety when separated from caregivers
  • Overly deferential behavior
  • A core need for someone to care for them

Additionally, five or more of the following signs may be present:

  • Discomfort with individuality and independence
  • Seeking affirmation and guidance from authority figures for all decisions
  • Handing over major responsibilities to others
  • Fear of abandonment by caregivers or authority figures
  • Acquiescing to secure continued care
  • Quickly replacing one authoritarian relationship with another
  • Difficulty maintaining mutual, give-and-take relationships
  • Downplaying personal thoughts, feelings, and preferences to satisfy others
