My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is emotionally focused therapy (EFT). I find the best benefit in EFT because it increases one's understanding of the role of emotion in psychotherapeutic change. EFT is useful because helps brings couples together emotionally and analyzes the human experience through a relational lens.
I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling: understanding a partner's love language, communication skills, CBT techniques such as cognitive reframing, encouraging the use of support groups, and psychoeducation.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when: the client gives positive feedback, the client appears to be healthier during future sessions, the client's spouse gives positive feedback about their spouse's progress, they appear to have a stronger connection during the future sessions, and they appear to be communicating more during the sessions.
Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling by completing all consent forms on their client portal, reading books or articles on couples counseling-related issues, attending support groups, journaling their life experiences, and making a visit to see a specialist.
To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can: sign all the consent forms on their client portal, ensure that your health insurance covers mental health visits, ensure that you have a debit or a credit card on file, and make sure you have an emergency contact person available.
Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:
Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.
Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.
Persistent and unresolved conflict is one of the prime causes of divorce, a continuing tension in a relationship negatively affects happiness and in some cases even health. Many married couples attempt to manage these conflicts alone, often successfully. However, professional help from couples therapy or marriage counseling is frequently for the benefit of both partners. Couples often find that resolving their differences is much easier when a professional counselor guides their dialogue in an impartial manner—allowing both partners to gain some perspective on their relationship and become better communicators.
If you believe that your marriage could benefit from marriage counseling or couples therapy, consider reaching out to Thriveworks in Greensboro, NC. We have relationship experts on staff who would be delighted to help you. Just give our office a call.
Improving communication to help facilitate conflict resolution is the key aim of couples and marriage counseling. Essentially, marriage counseling and couples therapy are designed to promote a joint effort, as both partners usually attend the counseling sessions. Here are a few major objectives:
Your therapist will aim to cover these topics in your sessions! They will also work to address the specific problems you and your partner are experiencing.
The majority of people will view marriage counseling or couples therapy as the last resort strategy to save their relationship. Whilst this is often the case, therapy is regularly chosen by couples who just want to improve their relationship and prevent small conflicts from escalating into something more serious. Whether one is in an unsettled relationship or looking to develop an even more solid bond with the partner, marriage counseling or couples therapy might be the right route to take. Yet, one has to be aware that couples and marriage therapy does not offer simple solutions—a counselor is not there to tell partners what to do. The aim of the therapy is to allow them to reach conclusions on their own.
At Thriveworks Counseling in Greensboro, NC, we have worked with all manners of people—young couples, old couples, people facing very challenging conflicts, as well as individuals who merely want to work through some minor issues affecting their partnership. Thanks to this broad experience we understand how to best support our clients—no matter who they are or what problems they need help with. We believe that change is possible—do not hesitate to contact us today to arrange your first couples or marriage counseling session.
