Joseph Garza is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who has over 13 years of experience. He enjoys working with clients of all ages, and especially loves when a client is open to change. Joseph has worked with various mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorders, ADHD, and many more. He has experience working with couples and families as well.
Joseph completed his Master's degree in Counseling at Dallas Baptist University. He has biblical counseling as a foundation, as well, if needed by his clients. This can add an additional resource and support for his clients, too. Joseph is certified in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and uses this along with exposure therapy to work with clients struggling with anxiety and other disorders.

Laura Stark is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor and National Certified Counselor with over 25 years of experience as a psychotherapist working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. She has over 10 years of clinical experience providing care for adolescents and adults in residential treatment centers and hospitalization programs. Laura also spent 5 years as a special education teacher and program coordinator for emotionally challenged students. She has an interest in mood, anxiety/panic disorders, ADHD, late-diagnosed ADHD, OCD, adjustments to life changes, Tourette Syndrome, and neurodiversity.

Kathy McBride is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 25 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and families. Kathy’s experience includes intensive in-home counseling, in-home parenting support, and school-based counseling services. My approach for helping people in grief & loss counseling is CBT & ACT. I find the best benefit in mixing these two therapies because CBT addresses the triggers, stressors, and symptoms of grief, and ACT helps with finding meaning in the loss through acceptance and helps clients find healthy ways to honor the loss.
I encourage clients to talk about their loss in sessions. The empty chair technique is a great way to address the death of a loved one and address any unspoken words.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling when they are finding more peace through acceptance. They also report less sadness and fewer depressive symptoms and are finding ways to honor or reframe the loss and move forward.
Clients can supplement their time in grief & loss counseling with writing. Another homework technique is a letter to address the loss/loved one, or poetry that resonates with their feelings and emotions. Another outlet is to encourage a client to start a journal. A personal favorite is to write down feelings and emotions tied to grief, saving them in the fireplace and then using them as kindling during the first cold night in winter.
To prepare for their first grief & loss counseling session, an individual can come with an open mind and not be afraid to show all of their emotions. First sessions are tough, and clients need to feel comfortable, physically and emotionally.
