My go-to approach for working with teens starts with building a strong relationship. This involves exploring the teen's interests and finding ways to relate. Generally, teenagers are no longer interested in the play-based interventions used in child therapy. Similarly, teens do not always resonate with adult-based treatment modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Joining the teenager on their level and making the greatest effort to try to understand and empathize with the individual serves as the best intervention for change. Once a solid relationship is built, teens tend to allow themselves to be more vulnerable when engaging in talk-based therapies. Depending on the client's individual needs, various approaches can then come into play.
I introduce different skills in teen therapy depending on the individual's needs. Sometimes, emotional regulation skills are appropriate. Other times, conflict resolution and communication skills are more pertinent.
