My go-to approach for helping people in couples counseling is to work towards taking criticism and blame out of conversations. Criticism makes one feel rejected and hurt. Utilizing many of the Gottmans' findings from research, I focus on noticing what's right and encouraging couples to speak their love, respect, and appreciation for each other.
I teach the following tools in couples counseling: Gottman's Softened-Start Up (how the start of a conversation influences the outcome), active-listening skills (allows one's partner to feel understood via thought and feeling empathy), communication skills of disarming and empathy, and a structured process for conflict disengagement (if one becomes physiologically flooded, then they lose the ability to think clearly, change perspectives, and channel empathy).
I know a couple is making meaningful progress when the individuals report fewer conflicts, they have less intense conflicts, and each partner feels more respected, valued, and appreciated.
Clients can supplement their time in couples counseling by scheduling pleasant events together. Shared activities among individuals tend to increase a bond.
To prepare for your first couples session, reflect on your own personal contribution to your relationship difficulties.

The Gottman Method of couples therapy is a research-supported approach designed to enhance relationships by bolstering the bond between partners, resolving conflicts, and fostering shared meaning in their relationship through comprehensive assessments and tailored interventions that improve communication, trust, and the overall health of the partnership.
If you’re facing persistent relationship problems, communication breakdowns, or unresolved conflicts that are impacting your emotional well-being and happiness, Couples/marriage therapy may be beneficial for you.

On average, couples attend marriage and couples counseling for 12 weeks. However, couples & marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.
