My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is to meet them exactly where they are — literally and figuratively — to be able to jointly assess and create a thorough, collaborative plan that works for each individual! In addition to providing clients with relevant tools and a safe place to process, I first enjoy hearing directly from the client and take great interest in their unique perspective and experience. After all, no one knows us better than we know ourselves and our own experience and knowledge is often invaluable when tailoring treatment plans and considering goals.
I teach the following tools in online therapy:
I know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy around the same time that they notice, as well! Some evidence of progress include: Improved confidence in social settings, self-reported decrease in overall mental health symptoms, ability to share vulnerable topics more readily, the release of tears, setting of healthy boundaries, advocacy for oneself, improved communication patterns within relationships, increased self-esteem, the ability to cope effectively across a wide variety of situations, etc. I view each client individually and “progress” looks different for each person, but it’s always evident even through online settings when a client is meeting their goals and making meaningful progress!
Clients can supplement their time in online therapy with anything that feels helpful to the individual. This will look different for each client, but I would broadly suggest engaging in self-care activities (things that recharge you mentally/emotionally/physically), journaling/recording thoughts in an alternative fashion, and thinking about/“chewing on” the topics discussed within therapy sessions and bringing additional thoughts to the next session!
To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can do many things to help decrease your anxiety and hesitation by making sure you have the logistics in order. This will include: A quiet, private space where you will feel comfortable and you won’t be interrupted (though I always welcome the occasional cat or dog passing by in the background!), a charged laptop/other device you plan to use for the session, and working internet. To prepare emotionally: Take a few slow, deep breaths and know that there’s a knowledgeable, caring provider on the other end of the screen ready to meet you exactly where you are and walk through the muck of life with you.
With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.
Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.
There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.
Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.
Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.
Online counseling allows for long-distance patient and client interaction and care via videoconferencing. Therapists can provide individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, psychoeducation, consultations, diagnosis and assessment, feedback, coaching, and more through online counseling.
