My approach for treating depression is helping the client identify current triggers as well as possible past trauma that contributes to the depression. I am gently curious and try to make connections to help the client understand the source and reason for the depressed mood. We practice safety planning and consider a referral to a psychiatrist if and when appropriate.
There is an emphasis on identifying negative self-beliefs and challenging thoughts of worthlessness or helplessness. We recognize and build on personal strengths, and develop healthy coping skills to manage intrusive symptoms.
I see progress when clients report feeling that life is more manageable, they enjoy the things they used to, and they start to rebuild relationships with others. Clients are also able to identify symptoms, use coping skills, and be proactive in their recovery.
Using the time between therapy sessions to practice new cognitions and behaviors is an important part of recovery. I like to suggest reading, journaling, a creative pursuit, and a physical pursuit.
Be prepared to answer a wide variety of questions for the assessment, which might not have a lot to do with the primary problem. Also, knowing any medications and dosage is really helpful. But overall, just take a deep breath and be open and honest about the problems you are experiencing.

Sometimes, people who are depressed don’t realize that they’re dealing with this mood disorder and blame themselves for feeling so down and exhausted. Being able to recognize the warning signs is an important first step in getting help. Some common symptoms of depression include:
Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, helps you learn to think about the way you think so that you can feel more in control of your emotional and mental state. There are different kinds of talk therapy, with some of the more commonly used for treating depression being cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and interpersonal therapy (IPT).
Some treatment plans will incorporate medication alongside therapy. These medications help stabilize your mood and reduce the major symptoms of depression. Medication isn’t always used to treat depression, but your therapist will work with you to determine if medication could help and make sure you understand your prescription.
Thriveworks also offers online sessions, so you can get the help you need without leaving the comfort of your home. Your counselor or therapist can meet with you over the phone or by video chat, which can be beneficial to you if your depression makes leaving the house difficult.
