About
As a person from a rural area, I understand the lack of mental health services available and want to provide high-quality, clinically driven telehealth services to those who are in need.
Kimberly Heitzman is a Licensed Social Worker with 11 years of experience in mental health. She began her professional career working in family preservation and general protective services casework. She worked with emergencies, the court system, behavioral health, drug and alcohol issues, and the justice system. Then, she worked as a behavioral specialist. Anxiety, depression, ODD, self-esteem, anger management, grief, and family therapy are great strengths of hers when providing therapy services. She loves working with teens and young adults and has experience with family systems.
Kimberly graduated from Bloomsburg University. She is able to see clients as human and understands that people cope with things in their own way. She also likes to go back to the basics and discuss emotions, how clients respond to those emotions, and how they affect their overall well-being.
Ever since she was young, Kimberly has been a “helper.” She has also experienced significant trauma and grief in life and utilized therapy services to help process those things. It has allowed her to remain humble and understand that everyone has been dealt a different hand in life, and we all process and manage those things in our own way.

My go-to approach for helping people in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is to help them learn to manage intense emotions through their imagination, such as by visualizing themselves experiencing an intense emotion while, in their imagination, they remain in complete control of themselves. I find benefit in helping clients learn how to face their intense emotions because it provides them with tools so that they can handle what are often the most challenging experiences of their lives.
In DBT, I teach the following tools:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in DBT when they are able to deal with a highly stressful event in an effective and respectful manner.
Clients can supplement their time in DBT by journaling their feelings on a regular basis.
To prepare for their first DBT session, an individual can make a list of the biggest challenges and stressors in their life for which they would like some relief.
At Thriveworks, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) primarily concentrates on assisting individuals in emotion regulation, enhancing interpersonal relationships, and acquiring effective coping strategies for managing stress and emotional difficulties.
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) targets your personal challenges. You may work with your DBT therapist to maintain diary cards to monitor progress, emphasizing validation and support in the therapeutic relationship. DBT follows a stage-based approach, prioritizing crisis reduction initially and life satisfaction.
DBT was initially developed to address the needs of individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, its versatile approach has enabled its application to a wide range of mental health conditions, including but not limited to, anxiety, depression, stress, and anger issues.
The 4 pillars of DBT are mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) have distinct purposes and aren’t inherently superior or inferior to one another. DBT is most effective for managing emotional regulation, personality disorders, and interpersonal challenges, while EMDR is specifically tailored for individuals with trauma-related conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
