Disheartening research from Nationwide Children’s Hospital confirms a large increase in suicide rates for females, especially young girls. Researchers examined suicide rates among kids and adolescents ages 10 to 19 from 1975 to 2016. They found that suicide rates began to increase in both males and females in 2007, but the increase was more significant in females, especially those between 10 and 14 years of age. This was observed in every region of the country. The researchers plan to investigate changes in gender-specific risk factors for suicide to determine proper means of intervention. They say that parents need to be aware of warning signs and should take their child to a mental health professional if they observe concerning behavior. Source: Ruch, D. A., Sheftall, A. H., et al.
