My approach to trauma therapy is to use trauma-informed CBT and mindfulness therapy. I prefer this modality because it empowers clients and teaches self-soothing skills.
I teach the following tools in trauma therapy: box breathing, mindfulness meditation, challenging negative thoughts, affirming positive thoughts, acceptance, and emotional distress tolerance.
I know a client is making meaningful progress when the severity of PTSD symptoms has lessened or gone away, client feedback indicates coping skills are being applied effectively, and the client is able to accept and cope with distress with heightened tolerance.
Clients can supplement their time in therapy by reading books on the topic, listening to podcasts, and spending time practicing tools for self-soothing.
To prepare for starting PTSD or trauma therapy, someone can be open to trying new ways of coping and approaching their emotional experience other than what they have done in the past.
