My go-to approach for helping people in cognitive behavioral therapy is to help clients learn to recognize their distortions in thinking that are creating the problems. Then I help them reevaluate the distortions in a caring, reality-based environment.
I teach the following tools in cognitive behavioral therapy: cognitive restructuring or reframing, guided discovery, journaling and thought records, activity scheduling, and behavior activation. When it comes to depression and anxiety, even small actions are better than no action.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy when they are able to recognize unhealthy behavior in themselves and take action to correct it.
Clients can supplement their time in cognitive behavioral therapy with journaling, mood and emotions mapping, using coping skills regularly, and tracking identified triggers.
To prepare for their first cognitive behavioral therapy session, an individual can start to think about the specific problems they would like to work on during CBT. Also, they can set treatment goals by writing down things they would like to accomplish in therapy.
