About
Patricia "Tricia" McCarty is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who enjoys helping people work through life transitions, addiction, grief/loss, chronic illness/pain, anxiety, depression, stress, and low self-esteem. Tricia uses a humanistic approach and a variety of therapeutic modalities, including cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness-based, strength-based, narrative, acceptance and commitment, expressive art as therapy, and positive psychotherapy.
Tricia completed her Master of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University. She will actively listen, help you gain perspective, explore with you what is keeping you from becoming the best version of yourself, and make a plan that will empower you to reach your goals.
“In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back into safety” (Abraham Maslow). Sometimes what feels safe, comfortable, and familiar, is actually unhealthy; change can be hard and the unknown scary. Do you feel stuck, repeating toxic patterns or negative thinking? Have life events or stress become overwhelming or seem unmanageable? Maybe you just need a supportive space to talk about what you’re going through and how you are feeling.

As an LCSW, my go-to approach for helping people who have anxiety is meeting them where they actually are, not where I think they should be. I work from the humanistic theory and utilize an integrative approach to fit the client's needs. This includes mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapy (MBCT), schema, strength-based therapy, Adlerian therapy, psychoanalytic therapy, psychodynamic therapy, existential therapy narrative therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), positive psychotherapy, coaching, internal family systems (IFS) therapy, motivational interviewing (MI), rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT), exposure and response prevention (ERP), solution-focused therapy, and interpersonal techniques.
I teach the following tools to those who have anxiety: developing self-awareness and self-compassion, setting attainable goals for behavioral change, challenging negative thoughts/self-talk, exploring healthy coping strategies that work for the individual, and growing beyond the client's comfortable but unhelpful patterns.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in therapy when they demonstrate a deeper understanding of their thoughts, behaviors, and feelings and they start incorporating the learned skills without being prompted.
Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy by tending to the pillars of mental health: physical needs (sleep, nutrition, exercise), mental and spiritual self-care, and fostering social supports. I also encourage mindfulness, meditation, and journaling.
To prepare for your first therapy session, you can come up with a sentence or two that summarizes what you are looking for in treatment. Be prepared to answer a bunch of questions as I learn about you and gather background info for the intake assessment. I ask that clients commit to at least 3 months of weekly or bi-weekly sessions. Other than that, strap yourself in, be open-minded and willing to do the work, and trust the therapeutic process!
Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Henrico, VA can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.
Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Henrico therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.
One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.
Common symptoms of anxiety include:
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.
Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.
On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.
