My go-to approach for treating depression is cognitive behavioral therapy. I prefer CBT because changing thinking patterns is proven to work to decrease depression symptoms.
I teach the following tools in depression counseling: reframing negative distorted thinking patterns, self-care, mindfulness, grounding work, and journaling.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they come to sessions and their mood has improved. Additionally, they report to me that using the CBT thought record is making a difference in how they view their world and others around them.
Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling with self-care and medication management if needed. Additionally, reaching out to support systems is always helpful.
To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can have a willingness to be honest and open about your struggles. Be prepared for a deep dive into your history with depression, thought patterns, and messages from childhood that have added to the struggle.
