Hear from our clinicians

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement family therapy?

Crystal Smith
Crystal Smith

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

Family members can practice healthy individual coping skills to improve how each member feels as they work in therapy to improve the functioning of the family unit.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

Crystal Smith
Crystal Smith

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

To prepare for your first online counseling session, I encourage setting up a safe and quiet space where a client can speak freely. I encourage people to double-check Zoom links and internet connections, so they are sure their technology is working, and bringing a notebook to sessions is helpful in case a client needs to write down anything.

What is your go-to approach for child therapy?

Crystal Smith
Crystal Smith

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

When working with kids in therapy, I like to use a combination of psychoeducation and play. Kids respond best in a relaxed environment, so we make having fun a priority! Through a combination of play and skill building, kids learn the tools necessary to improve emotion regulation, improve coping skills, and process the events that are contributing to difficulty. I also believe in including parents or caregivers at the end of a session so that they can reinforce the skills at home to help the child make as much progress as possible.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

Crystal Smith
Crystal Smith

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

In following the Gottman approach to couples therapy, I teach about the sound relationship house, focusing on rebuilding the relationship in a healthy way. I also supplement this approach with cognitive behavioral therapy tools that challenge negative core beliefs, explore cognitive distortions that contribute to mistrust, and work to improve reflective listening so both parties feel heard and supported.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

Crystal Smith
Crystal Smith

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

I know a client is making meaningful progress in treatment when they report improvements in the way they are feeling. Clients begin to recognize the distortions at work and recognize what they need to do to move into a healthier space.
