My go-to approaches for helping people in therapy are acceptance and commitment therapy and Polyvagal theory. I prefer these two because of the focus on values and being able to move toward one's intended goal regardless of their emotional state. ACT also teaches that there are no such things as “good” or “bad” emotions. Polyvagal theory works within the nervous system to assist with emotional regulation. Utilizing these two approaches allows for more targeted and real-time assistance.
There is a focus on self-care and challenging the thoughts and beliefs clients may have about themselves.
I know that a client is making meaningful progress when they inform me of the changes made and display decreased emotional reactivity to the themes surrounding what brought them into therapy and have increased movement toward their intended goal.
Clients can practice learned strategies in addition to checking out suggested supplemental information in between sessions to supplement their time in therapy.
One of the things I think would be helpful is for someone to know that it is okay for them to feel uncomfortable starting therapy and that it is not a “quick fix.”
